Theory of Constraints (TOC)
Usual believe is that debottlenecking constraints – there is at least one limiting factor in each system – is the remedy solving the trough-put challenges and improving the flow of work. However, it is not always possible in a work system to increase capacity of a certain expertise in a given situation and ‘widen the bottleneck’. Another way of looking at it focuses on the internal factors – mental believes or policies – which effect rather the dynamics and speed of the flow and try to improve them to increase overall output. By reducing the work systems internal frictions through lean & agile work management practices it is maybe not possible to achieve ‘double the work in half of the time’ but efficiency improvement up to 15% are reasonably achieved while also increasing staff engagement.
